🇪🇸 Spain
Marriage equality since 2005 and a 2023 trans self-ID law. Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Sitges and Torremolinos rank among Europe's most queer-friendly cities; rural inland areas more reserved.

🇵🇹 Portugal
Marriage equality since 2010, full adoption rights, constitutional anti-discrimination on sexual orientation. Lisbon and Porto are highly inclusive; Algarve is welcoming due to large expat presence.

Marriage equality nationwide since 2022 (state-by-state rollout completed). Mexico City, Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta highly inclusive; rural macho culture more conservative.

Marriage equality since 2010 (first in Latin America). Gender Identity Law 2012 is among world's most progressive. Buenos Aires is one of LatAm's most queer-friendly cities; some federal protections under review by Milei government since 2024.

Marriage equality since 2014 (E&W and Scotland) / 2020 (NI). Strong workplace protections via Equality Act 2010. UK Supreme Court 2025 ruling on sex/gender in Equality Act has narrowed trans protections; consult charity Stonewall for current state.

🇮🇹 Italy
Civil unions since 2016 but no marriage equality and no same-sex adoption. Rome, Milan, Bologna and Florence are inclusive; southern rural areas more conservative. The 2023 Meloni-era directive instructed municipalities to stop registering foreign same-sex parents on birth certificates.

🇵🇱 Poland
Civil partnerships introduced 2025 under Tusk government but no marriage or adoption rights. Several voivodeships repealed 'LGBT-free zone' declarations 2023–2024. Warsaw, Kraków, Poznań are safe and increasingly visible; small-town climate remains conservative.

🇭🇺 Hungary
2020 constitutional amendment defines family as man + woman; no marriage or adoption. 2021 'child protection' law restricts LGBTQ content visibility to minors. Budapest Pride still operates but faces 2025 restrictions.
